What is Radon and Why Should You Mitigate It?
Radon (Rn) is a colorless, odorless gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. It seeps into homes from the ground through cracks and openings in the foundation. Long term exposure to radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in America, this is due to the releasing of alpha particles during the decay process. Alpha particles can then be inhaled, especially if attached to dust particles in the air which results in the damaging of cells lining the airways. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) highly recommends the installation of a radon reduction system if levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L.
